It’s been so long since I’ve let out a piece of my mind, let alone a piece of anything, on this blog, but I honestly can’t keep this bottled up. Last night Kevin Durant had an explosive dunk against the Warriors in which, afterward, he mimed a throat slit and then ‘prayed.’ After the game he explained the gesture, “kill em and pray for em.”

This morning on Fox News…I’m sorry, ESPN’s First Take, there was an actual discussion on whether or not it was ‘over the line.’ Now the fact that this was even debated is ludicrous, but an accurate reflection of the show and the direction ESPN is headed with the exception of a few (Simmons, Lowe, pretty much any Grantland contributor).

Skip Bayless and every NBA’s players BFF, Stephen A. Smith are a disgrace to sports journalism. Now when they try to defend each other, they often like to say “we’ve worked hard to get where we are and people would kill to do what we do.” Well yes guys, that is true. However, a casual sports fan COULD do what you do. Do you take pride in that? The fact that because you caught breaks and put in work, you’re now on a national stage to debate puff pieces? I, personally, would be embarrassed that all my hard work had resulted in weak journalism that is spoon fed to the masses.

My biggest problem is that none of their arguments or opinions hold water. They are to be taken at face value, and from the looks of it, that’s all they care to give. I have never taken a journalism course in my life, BUT as an English major I felt like I wrote more essays than T.S. Eliot (nerd joke) and one of the most important things I learned is this, IF YOU GIVE AN OPINION, YOU BETTER HAVE SOME KIND OF EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THAT OPINION OTHERWISE IT IS REFUTABLE. The fact that this show is still on the air, which I’m assuming people only watch to make themselves mad, is nothing short of a miracle. How dare these men try to call out someone like Jalen Rose, Lebron James, or Kevin Durant. If it weren’t for these guys doing what they do, you’d be out of a job. Instead of doing actual research, you model your style after the likes of TMZ. You wonder why some guys you badmouth don’t come on to stick up for themselves? It’s because they’d rather speak to someone more credible then you.

This is my first time being published on Grantland, and it’s a really big deal for me. If I win this season, I become the ESPN/Grantland Fantasy Football writer. I’ll need some big help from all my fans when it comes time for fan voting.

I love music, and I love sports. I don’t talk about sports much here, but I spend my days alternating between music and ESPN radio. Being able to write for Grantland is a dream come true for me.

Click here to check out the link. Tell all your friends that Shane Morris isn’t just a music genius anymore. I’m taking over sports too. Here we go.

So, I was just asked to write for Grantland, ESPN’s subsidiary “thinking man’s site” by Bill Simmons.
I’ll be writing in a new fantasy football section, doing two posts a week.
I’m so stoked right now, I don’t even have words. This is probably like, the coolest thing to ever happen to me - sports-wise at least.

Friend-of-sportspage shanemorris is writing fantasy for Grantland this year. I’ll link to his articles when they post, you should all read them and give our colleagues some love. Congrats!

MUST WATCHThe Webbys, Spike Lee and the Year in Sports

The great team over at Grantland asked me to put together a video covering the Year in Sports online for the Webby Awards.  Not just the big moments in games, but the moments that took off on the Internet.  I happen to have two rules in life:

  1. Be kind to others.
  2. When Bill Simmons’ Grantland calls and asks for a video covering the Year in Sports online for the Webby Awards - and not just the big moments in games, but the moments that took off on the Internet - you say yes.

So I made one.  Kindly.

What I did not know is that my video would be played on a giant floating screen, amidst a complex framework of pipes and bubbling erlenmeyer flask.  I also did not know Spike Lee would introduce the video, but I gotta be honest, it’s the really huge, bubbling erlenmeyer flask that surprised me. [SCIENCE!!!]

Best part is, if you turn the volume on your computer all the way up, and listen really, very closely, in a room that has little to no distraction whatsoever, you can hear one laugh.

Hope you watch and enjoy.  Thanks to Grantland for the opportunity, and check out their incredible site here.

Lakers pull out of deal for Paul; Trade Kardashian Odom for nothing
So Howard’s the target now? I don’t get it. They have bigs. I know Gasol is getting old and Bynum’s lower joints have been doomed since birth, but holding onto one of those two and teaming him with Paul and Kobe sounds better than just Howard and Kobe to me. I’m assuming they’ll have to give up Gasol and Bynum for Howard, but who really knows at this point? Odom for ‘draft considerations’ makes even less sense to me. He seems much more valuable to the team as a bargaining chip or a sixth man than those ‘draft considerations’ will be. Thoughts?

This is ridiculous. I love how they refer to him as the “unhappy Odom”, maybe that’s because he’s well aware that we was traded days ago.  Anyway, I was so thrilled that the NBA was back, and I forget how misguided the league is sometimes. First of all, the Lakers should have just thrown in a draft pick and resubmitted the trade. I’m pretty sure that Stern regrets vetoing the deal, and a small adjustment would have put it over the top. He couldn’t possibly approve the same deal and not look more foolish, so throw in something useless.  Oh well, it’s obviously off the table now. Basically, the Hornets are only allowed to trade him to a bad or small market team now or the owners (*AHEM* Dan Gilbert) will complain. This means, the Knicks, Celtics, Clippers(are they big market? I mean it’s LA, but the Clippers), are all not allowed to trade for him, and they probably offer the best three packages, which will probably be worse than what the Lakers gave up.

“Bill Simmons and John Walsh discuss the life and legacy of legendary journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson.”

It’s probably not in my best judgement to post “competition” (I write comically), but I found this really interesting.  Hunter S. Thompson started and ended his writing career as a sports writer, a profession that I do now.  So I find it quite engrossing to listen to two famous writers talk about a fellow writer, his crazy antics, and the paths their careers took.
