Red Sox Sign Marco Scutaro

The Red Sox shortstop carousel continues as Theo Epstein tries to fill the biggest void in his GM career, a franchise shortstop. Since Theo traded Nomar leading to the 04 World Series, shortstops have been Orlando Cabrera, Edgar Renteria, Alex Gonzalez, Alex Cora, Julio Lugo, Jed Lowrie, Alex Gonzalez (again), and now Marco Scutaro.

This in only a stop gap until Cuban defensive gem, Jose Iglesias is ready to play in the majors. Iglesias is 19 and expected to be in the majors in two years. In the meantime, Scutaro will have to fill that gap. Marco had a career year at the age of 33. He batted .282, .379 OBP (right up Theo’s alley), Slugged .409, with 12 HRs & 60 RBI. If these numbers hold up, he could be a decent #9 hitter in this lineup but what are the chances he can keep up these numbers?

The deal is relatively good money. $1MM signing bonus, $5MM in 2010, $5MM in 2011, and a 2012 option with a $6MM club option, $3MM player option, and $1.5MM buyout. That makes it a two-year, $12.5MM deal. On top of the money, he will cost the Sox a 1st round draft pick.

Sox fans better hope a bigger deal is in the works, Holliday to play LF and maybe a top starting pitcher. If that’s the case Scutaro won’t cost the sox a 1st round pick as well. Signing a type A free agent will lessen the blow of what they have to give up.

If Iglesias can flash the leather like they say he can, I’m already counting the days until he’s starting at short for the Sox.

Actually him apologizing for his “transgression” might be the first time ESPN has even mentioned any transgressions on Tigers part.

Pretty soon they might actually report that Ben Roethlisberger had some transgressions as well.

Maybe this is why the N in ESPN does’t stand for news.

Maurice Jones-Drew lost in his fantasy league because he took a knee on the one. Jones said he lost his game by five points and fell to 6-4. A devoted fantasy player, his unselfish act may cost him a playoff spot in his league.
